Suicide Squad 2 and X-Force get directors, first look at Black Panther villain, Thor: Ragnarok beats Justice League and more – Daily News Roundup

September 8, 2017 by Luke Owen

IT’S GOOD TO BE BAD

After a long search, the director for Suicide Squad 2 has been revealed as Gavin O’Connor (Warrior), who will also write the script. Other directors WB previously looked at include Mel Gibson and Jaume Collet-Serra. While original Suicide Squad writer and director David Ayer is not returning, he will be moving onto Gotham City Sirens, led by Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. Read more here.

X-DIRECTOR

Having flirted with the superhero genre on Sony’s abandoned Spider-Man spinoff The Sinister Six and Netflix’s Marvel series Daredevil, Drew Goddard has now signed on to write and direct the X-Men spinoff X-Force for 20th Century Fox. Deadline reports that regular X-Men producers Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner will produce along with Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds, who will be reprising the role of the Merc with a Mouth alongside his Deadpool 2 co-star Josh Brolin as Cable. KILLMONGER

Thanks to the official toyline, we got our first look at the villain from next year’s Black Panther, Erik Killmonger. Check him out here, but you may need to look twice…

WHO IS THE LAST JEDI?

Since the title of Star Wars: Episode VIII was first announced as Star Wars: The Last Jedi, there’s been a lot of speculation as to which character – or characters – the title refers to: is it Luke Skywalker? Rey? Both? “It’s in the opening crawl of Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” Rian Johnson told The New York Times. “Luke Skywalker, right now, is the last Jedi. There’s always wiggle room in these movies — everything is from a certain point of view — but coming into our story, he is the actual last of the Jedi. And he’s removed himself and is alone on this island, for reasons unknown.” Read more here.

THOR > JUSTICE

The comic book movie wars continue this October and November with the releases of Thor: Ragnarok and Justice League – and according to a poll by Fandango, The God of Thunder is leading the charge. “Moviegoers always look forward to the fall season when some of the year’s best films debut,” says Fandango Managing Editor Erik Davis. “This year there’s an especially diverse slate full of a little something for everyone. Thor: Ragnarok claims the most anticipated title, thanks to the overwhelming momentum and excitement the Marvel Studios brand has built up over the years, plus fans can’t wait to see more of Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, as well as Cate Blanchett and Tessa Thompson in new-to-the-franchise roles.” Read more here.
