Given that it featured DC’s three most iconic characters – and indeed, three of the most iconic characters in all of comic books – Warner Bros.’ Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice didn’t quite manage to perform to expectations at the box office, falling short of the $900 million mark worldwide.
Next month its the turn of the villains, as the studio unleashes Suicide Squad, and if tracking is to be believed it looks like the studio can rest easy this time around, as it is being reported that the film is looking at a domestic opening weekend north of $125 million, which would be the biggest ever for the month of August.
The current record for an August bow is $94.3 million, set by Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014; meanwhile, it also looks likely that Suicide Squad will give box office megastar Will Smith his biggest debut, which currently stands at $77.2 million for I Am Legend.

Batman v Superman managed a whopping $166 million North American opening back in March (and the biggest worldwide opening for a superhero movie with $424.1 million globally), though it suffered a massive drop in its second weekend off the back of mixed reviews and disappointing word out mouth. Expectations are of course lower for Suicide Squad, but if the tracking is accurate the film will surpass Man of Steel’s domestic opening of $116.6 million, and if it can live up to the buzz on social media, the sky could be the limit for the Worst Heroes Ever.
