Super Troopers 3 is officially on the way, with Jay Chandrasekhar returning to direct and reprise his role as Thorny. He’ll be joined once again by his longtime collaborators Kevin Heffernan (Farva), Steve Lemme (Mac), Paul Soter (Foster), and Erik Stolhanske (Rabbit). Also returning are Brian Cox as Captain John O’Hagan and Marisa Coughlan as Ursula Hanson.
The Super Troopers franchise is a cult comedy series by the Broken Lizard troupe, centered on a group of prank-loving Vermont state troopers. The original film, released in 2001, was made for just $1.2 million and became a sleeper hit, grossing over $23 million despite mixed reviews. Its absurd humor and quotable lines helped it build a strong cult following.
Seventeen years later, Super Troopers 2 (2018) arrived after a successful crowdfunding campaign, raising $4.6 million. The sequel, set in a disputed Canadian border town, earned $31.6 million on a $13.5 million budget. While never critical darlings, the films thrive on loyal fans and a brand of stoner-friendly, slapstick humor.
“Broken Lizard has been part of the Searchlight family for over two decades, and we couldn’t be more thrilled for another entry in the Super Troopers saga,” said Searchlight President Matthew Greenfield. “Super Troopers has a way of making the absurd feel inevitable, and we can’t wait to bring audiences along on another adventure with these characters who leave a trail of joy and laughter, wherever their patrols may take them.”
“Broken Lizard is excited to help bring the theatrical comedy back,” added Chandrasekhar. “To America, we say, ‘It’s mustache-growing time!'”
Joining the cast are Nat Faxon as Captain Todd Markowski, Chace Crawford as Baker Buchanan, and Andrew Dismukes as Coy Burns, and production is now underway.
