Sydney Sweeney to star in adaptation of classic novel Custom of the Country

January 22, 2026 by Matt Rodgers

Following the box-office success of her latest literary adaptation, The Housemaid, Sydney Sweeney is once again bringing the written word to life by starring in a big-screen version of Edith Wharton’s classic 1913 novel Custom of the Country.

Per THR the Euphoria and Immaculate star will also produce the film, which is being directed by Mary Queen of Scots helmer Josie Rourke for StudioCanal and Rabbit’s Foot Films.

Rourke has also written the script, which tells the story of Undine Spragg (Sweeney), a materialistic and driven young woman from the Midwest who uses her allure and father’s fortune to climb the social-ladder in the early part of the 20th Century. Marry and divorcing in order to improve her social standing, Spragg soon finds her ambition unfulfilled in this world of Gilded Age snobbery.

Sweeney is coming off the back of critical success for her performance in boxing biopic Christy, and commercial success with the £200 million (and counting) gross of Paul Feig thriller The Housemaid. Next up for her is the eagerly anticipated return of Sam Levinson’s acclaimed teen drama Euphoria, which returns from a three-year hiatus this April.

Let us know whether you’ve read Custom of the Country and if you think Sweeney is a good fit for Undine Spragg by heading to our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
