SyFy adapting George R.R. Martin novella Nightflyers

May 12, 2017 by Ricky Church

More of George R.R. Martin’s work will be coming to television, but this time its not connected to the A Song of Ice and Fire saga or the potential four spin-offs of Game of Thrones as SyFy has announced that it will develop Martin’s novella Nightflyers with Jacob’s Ladder‘s Jeff Buhler writing and executive producing the series.

Written in 1980, Nightflyers is set in the future on the eve of Earth’s destruction, as a crew of explorers journey on the most advanced ship in the galaxy, The Nightflyer, to intercept a mysterious alien spacecraft that might hold the key to their survival. As the crew nears their destination, they discover that the ship’s artificial intelligence and never-seen captain may be steering them into deadly and unspeakable horrors deep in the dark reaches of space.

Nightflyers was made into a feature film in 1987 that was directed by Robert Collector with a script from Robert Jaffe. Jaffe will be involved in the television series as a producer, although due to his involvement with HBO and Game of Thrones and the potential spin-offs, not to mention the long-delayed Winds of Winter in the Song of Ice and Fire book series, Martin will not be involved in the show’s development.
