Avengers: Infinity War spoilers follow. You have been warned…
After destroying S.H.I.E.L.D. in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and splitting the Avengers in Captain America: Civil War, screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely took things to another level entirely in Avengers: Infinity War.
Having failed to stop Thanos acquiring all six Infinity Stones, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes found themselves helpless to prevent Thanos from achieving his goal of wiping out half of all life in the universe, and with one quick snap of his fingers, the Mad Titan succeeded in his goal.
It was certainly a shocking ending to Infinity War, but as Markus and McFeely have revealed to The New York Times, things could have played out much differently as an early draft of the script had the Snap occurring in in the as-yet-untitled Avengers 4.
“But what we realized is, it would feel more like a cliffhanger than we intended,” said Markus, who went on to state that had they stuck to that plan, Avengers 4 “would be a continuation of exactly what you were watching before.”
“[We wanted a movie] that went all the way to a tragic ending,” he said about Infinity War. “And then one where mysterious things happen that I can’t tell you about. It’s really, I think, difficult to predict where we go next [in Avengers 4].”
Marvel has made it clear that it views Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 as two distinct movies rather than the originally announced two-parter, so with that in mind it definitely makes sense for the Snap to have taken place in Infinity War. And of course, it’s also a perfect way to get fans brimming with excitement about Avengers 4 and where the story might go next.
