The Black Phone’s Scott Derrickson to produce adaptation of horror novel Ghost Eaters

July 12, 2025 by Matt Rodgers

Always one to look for innovative ways to operate in the horror genre, The Black Phone and Sinister director Scott Derrickson is set to bring critically acclaimed novel Ghost Eaters to the big screen.

Published in 2022, Clay McLeod Chapman’s page-turning novel focuses on Erin, a young woman who bails her boyfriend out of rehab, only for him to die of an overdose. Grief-stricken, and with her world falling apart, Erin is told of a new drug called Ghost that allows users to see the dead. Once she starts taking the paranormal paracetamol, the side-effects begin manifesting, and as the book blurb warns, she can never go back.

According to The Hollywood Reporter Derrickson will team up with his wife, Maggie Levin (My Valentine), who will write and direct Ghost Eaters for Screen Gems. Derrickson, C. Robert Cargill (Sinister) and Vince Cheng (The Hitman’s Bodyguard) will develop and produce via Crooked Highway.
