Lorraine Warren has been prone to the odd premonition over the course of The Conjuring franchise, but even she couldn’t have seen the box-office performance of The Conjuring: Last Rites coming.
The fourth and ‘final’ film in the main Conjuring through-line was projected to earn approximately $40 million at the domestic box-office, but the $55 million budgeted chiller blew that out of the water with $83 million, all on the way to the second biggest global horror opening ever with $187 million. That’s second only to Stephen King’s It Chapter One, which debuted with $190 million in 2017.
We called The Conjuring: Last Rites “an entertaining last ride” in our ★★★ review (which you can read here) and it appears that audiences around the world agreed.
The Michael Chaves-directed sequel adds to the $2.3 billion that The Conjuring Universe has so far grossed at the worldwide box-office. The highest earner is 2018’s The Nun, which took $365.6 million, while the most successful of the Ed and Lorraine Warren outings is The Conjuring 2, which scared up $322 million back in 2016.
