The Divergent Series: Insurgent opens to $101 million worldwide

March 23, 2015 by admin

Despite opening to mostly mediocre reviews (the film is currently at 32% on Rotten Tomatoes and 42 on Metacritic), The Divergent Series: Insurgent has had a pretty decent opening, though slightly below expectations.

Opening in just under 3,900 screens in the US, The Divergent Series: Insurgent took $54 million domestically, putting it ahead of last week’s number one Cinderella, which pulled in $34.4 million. This is more or less on point with the release of Divergent which took $54.6 million on its opening weekend last year.

However the film did well internationally and added an extra $47 million to the proceedings, to give it a worldwide total of $101 million worldwide.

The next book in the series Allegiant is set to be split into two movies (The Divergent Series: Allegiant: Part 1 and The Divergent Series: Allegiant: Part 2) and will be released in 2016 and 2017 respectively.

THE DIVERGENT SERIES: INSURGENT raises the stakes for Tris as she searches for allies and answers in the ruins of a futuristic Chicago. Tris (Woodley) and Four (James) are now fugitives on the run, hunted by Jeanine (Winslet), the leader of the power-hungry Erudite elite. Racing against time, they must find out what Tris’s family sacrificed their lives to protect, and why the Erudite leaders will do anything to stop them. Haunted by her past choices but desperate to protect the ones she loves, Tris, with Four at her side, faces one impossible challenge after another as they unlock the truth about the past and ultimately the future of their world.

The Divergent Series: Insurgent is out now with a cast that includes Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Ansel Elgort, Maggie Q, Keiynan Lonsdale, Mekhi Phifer, Miles Teller, Zoe Kravitz, Kate Winslet, Octavia Spencer, Jai Courtney and Naomi Watts.
