The Fate of the Furious tops $900 million worldwide

April 23, 2017 by Amie Cranswick

Having topped Star Wars: The Force Awakens for the biggest worldwide opening of all time last weekend, Universal Pictures’ The Fate of the Furious has now pushed its worldwide haul to $908.4 million in its second weekend.

Domestically, The Fate of the Furious retained top spot at the box office with $38.7 million – down 61% from its $100.2 million debut – while it added another $163.4 million internationally to take its offshore cume to a whopping $744.8 million. The film will hit $1 billion this coming week, and will likely surpass Beauty and the Beast’s $1.1 billion haul next weekend to become the biggest earner of the year so far.

Universal has already dated Fast & Furious 9 for April 19th 2019 and Fast & Furious 10 for April 2nd 2021, while it has been announced this week that the Dwayne Johnson / Jason Statham spinoff has also been given the greenlight.

Now that Dom and Letty are on their honeymoon and Brian and Mia have retired from the game—and the rest of the crew has been exonerated—the globetrotting team has found a semblance of a normal life. But when a mysterious woman (Oscar winner Charlize Theron) seduces Dom into the world of crime he can’t seem to escape and a betrayal of those closest to him, they will face trials that will test them as never before.

From the shores of Cuba and the streets of New York City to the icy plains of the arctic Barents Sea, our elite force will crisscross the globe to stop an anarchist from unleashing chaos on the world’s stage…and to bring home the man who made them a family.

The Fate of the Furious is directed by F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton) and features a cast that includes Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Eva Mendes, Elsa Pataky, Lucas Black, Nathalie Emmanuel, Kurt Russell, Kristofer Hivju, Scott Eastwood, Helen Mirren and Charlize Theron.
