The Golden Girls almost cameoed in Ralph Breaks the Internet

November 26, 2018 by Amie Cranswick

The hit animated sequel Ralph Breaks the Internet featured a host of cameos from the Disney archives, and it seems we almost had four more in Dorothy, Blanche, Rose and Sophia, stars of the classic 1980s sitcom The Golden Girls.

Speaking to Yahoo!, co-directors Rick Moore and Phil Johnston, the original plan was to have the beloved characters such up when Ralph and Vanellope visit the website OhMyDisney, which is apparently packed with Golden Girls content in real life.

Johnston: “As we were studying the OhMy.Disney website … The Golden Girls were weirdly prominent throughout. They really lean in on that website to The Golden Girls. A lot of quizzes, a lot of lists… So in an early animatic of the film, the Golden Girls themselves – Blanche, Rose, Dorothy and Sophia – appeared in the scene. We threw it in the movie animatic and people were like, ‘What?!””

Moore: “It was a little confusing. If you were not familiar with the website, it was a bit confusing.”

Johnston: “You’re asking my regrets when I’m on my deathbed? [Smiling] It’s that – that the Golden Girls are not in this movie.”

Ralph Breaks the Internet leaves Litwak’s video arcade behind, venturing into the uncharted, expansive and thrilling world of the internet – which may or may not survive Ralph’s wrecking. Video game bad guy Ralph (voice of John C. Reilly) and fellow misfit Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Sarah Silverman) must risk it all by traveling to the world wide web in search of a replacement part to save Vanellope’s video game, Sugar Rush. In way over their heads, Ralph and Vanellope rely on the citizens of the internet – the netizens – to help navigate their way, including a website entrepreneur named Yesss (voice of Taraji P. Henson), who is the head algorithm and the heart and soul of the trendmaking site “BuzzzTube”.

Ralph Breaks the Internet is being directed by Rich Moore and Phil Johnston (a writer on the original movie), and will see John C. Reilly joined by returning voice stars Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer and Jane Lynch.
