The Karate Kid sequel series Cobra Kai renewed for second season

May 11, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Following its hugely successful premiere this month, YouTube Red has now announced that it has renewed its hit Karate Kid sequel series Cobra Kai for a second season.

The follow-up to the classic 80s movie series sees a down on his luck Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) reopening the Cobra Kai dojo, reigniting his rivalry with his high school nemesis Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) some 30 years after their showdown at the All Valley Karate Tournament.

The first episode of Cobra Kai has racked up over 20 million views since its premiere, so it comes as little surprise that we’ll be getting another season. The second season of ten episodes will go into production this year, and premiere on YouTube Red in 2019.

Here’s the announcement video…

In the highly-anticipated return of two iconic characters, the arch-rivals from the legendary Karate Kid film series reunite over 30 years after the events of the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament. Now living in the affluent hills of Encino, Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) leads an enviable life with his beautiful family, while running a successful string of car dealerships throughout the valley. Meanwhile, his high school adversary, Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), whose life has taken a rocky turn, seeks redemption by reopening the infamous Cobra Kai karate dojo. Their lives inevitably become intertwined and the rivalry is reignited, setting forth the next generation of “karate kids” in COBRA KAI, a YouTube Red Original Series. COBRA KAI is produced by Overbrook Entertainment in association with Sony Pictures Television.

Cobra Kai sees Ralph Macchio and William Zabka reprising their roles from The Karate Kid, while the series also stars Courtney Henggeler (Mom), Mary Mouser (Freakish), Xolo Maridueña (Parenthood), Tanner Buchanan (Designated Survivor) and Ed Asner (Elf).
