The Mummy director says the Dark Universe movie wasn’t what he wanted it to be

February 10, 2019 by Samuel Brace

Alex Kurtzman, the director of The Mummy, has admitted that the film wasn’t what he “wanted it to be” and that he is no longer involved in the Dark Universe.

Universal had some pretty grand designs for their Dark Universe, a shared film universe built around their classic monster movie properties. The Mummy was supposed to be a big part of that but the film was less than well received upon release.

What did Alex Kurtzman, the director of The Mummy and one of the producers steering the Dark Universe, think about the picture? Well, the director himself admits that it wasn’t what he had hoped for and that he is not going to be a part of the franchise going forward. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Kurtzman said:

“The Mummy wasn’t what I wanted it to be. I’m no longer involved in that and have no idea what’s going on with it. I look back on it now [and] what felt painful at the time ended up being an incredible blessing for me. I learned that I need to follow my own instincts, and when I can’t fully do that, I don’t think I can succeed.”

It’s, of course, a shame that Kurtzman wasn’t able to make the film he wanted. Fingers crossed his future cinematic endeavours turn out more to his liking. What did you think of The Mummy? Are you hoping to see further instalments in the Dark Universe? Let us know your thoughts in the comments…
