The next X-Men film will take place in the 1990s

May 9, 2016 by James Garcia

If you’ve been following the X-Men film franchise over the last few years, you may have noticed a new trend: Decade-long time jumps between installments. 2011’s X-Men: First Class took place in the 1960s, its 2014 follow-up X-Men: Days of Future Past jumped 10 years into the 1970s, and this year’s X-Men: Apocalypse is jumping to the 1980s. According to producer Simon Kinberg, that trend will continue going forward, and the next film in the franchise will take us back to what many consider the golden age of Professor X’s team of gifted youngsters: the 1990s.

ComingSoon caught up with Kinberg while doing the press rounds for Apocalypse, and he confirmed that “the next one is set in the ’90s.” Unfortunately, he didn’t say which “next one” he was referring to. We know it’s not Wolverine 3, which takes place in the future. It could perhaps be Deadpool 2 (thanks to the appearance of fan-favorite time-hopping mutant Cable), the inevitable Apocalypse sequel, or even Josh Boone’s in-production spinoff film, New Mutants.

If the next film is in fact the Apocalypse sequel, I wonder how they’ll explain Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy playing 60 year olds…

What upcoming X-Men movie would you like to see jump to the 1990s? Sound off with your thoughts in the comments below!
