The Punisher series ordered by Netflix

April 29, 2016 by Ricky Church

Since even before the second season of Daredevil aired on Netflix, the question of whether or not The Punisher would get his own series wasn’t a matter of if, but when. Entertainment Weekly has just confirmed that the character, played by Jon Bernthal, will indeed be getting his own Netflix series. Among that news is a teaser image for the upcoming series…

Writer and executive producer Steve Lightfoot, who most recently worked on Bryan Fuller’s Hannibal, will showrun The Punisher with Bernthal of course reprising the role. When Netflix and Marvel plan to air the series or even start production is unknown at this time. Currently Luke Cage is set for September of this year and Iron Fist sometime next, leading up to a crossover between all the Netflix heroes in The Defenders.

There could be some time to fill in between those shows, especially since The Punisher is largely unconnected with The Defenders or any Marvel group. Regardless, this is some exciting news as Bernthal’s performance was one of the highlights of Daredevil’s second season.

UPDATE: Several statements have now been made regarding this news as well as a “teaser” on Netflix US’ Twitter account.

“We want to thank the fans who are clamoring for more of Jon’s stunning and powerful performance as Frank Castle from ‘Marvel’s Daredevil,’” said Executive Producer/Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb. “Now combined with Showrunner Steve Lightfoot’s compelling writing, we’re thrilled to bring ‘Marvel’s The Punisher’ to Netflix.”

“Jon hooked our global audience with his performance as Frank Castle from the moment he stepped on screen in ‘Marvel’s Daredevil,’ and we are looking forward to seeing more of him in this role under the vision of Steve Lightfoot,” said Cindy Holland, Netflix Vice President of Original Content.

“For me, the complexity and unpredictability of Frank Castle make him an incredibly compelling character and I couldn’t be more excited to dive into his world,” said Executive Producer and Showrunner, Steve Lightfoot. “After watching Jon’s performance in ‘Marvel’s Daredevil’ I could not be more excited to be working with him to further develop and progress the story of this anti-hero in a show of his own.”
