The Queen’s Gambit is being turned into a stage musical

March 9, 2021 by Liam Waddington

After finding success at the Golden Globes Awards and the Critics’ Choice Television Awards, Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit is being turned into a stage musical.

According to Variety, production company Level Forward had acquired the theatrical stage rights to The Queen’s Gambit, with the intention of turning the coming-of-age period drama into a musical. However, there is currently no news on casting details or the creative team linked to the project as of reporting this.

“It is a privilege for Level Forward to lead the charge of bringing The Queen’s Gambit to the stage through the beloved and enduring craft of musical theater,” said Level Forward CEO Adrienne Becker and producer Julia Dunetz. “Told through a brave and fresh point of view, audiences are already sharing in the friendship and fortitude of the story’s inspiring women who energize and sustain Beth Harmon’s journey and ultimate triumph. The story is a siren call amidst our contemporary struggles for gender and racial equity, and we’re looking forward to moving the project forward.”

As mentioned above, Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit recently won two awards at the Golden Globes including Best Limited Series or Television Film and Best Actress – Miniseries or Television Film for Anya Taylor-Joy. Taylor-Joy also won the Critic’s Choice Television Award for Best Actress in a Movie/Miniseries as well as the series-winning Best Limited Series. The Queen’s Gambit has also set Netflix’s viewership record by becoming the most-watched scripted limited series to date on the platform.
