The Russo Brothers would like to direct Marvel’s Secret Wars

December 2, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Having directed the Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War, directors Anthony and Joe Russo were entrusted by Marvel to bring the studio’s two-part Avengers epic to the big screen with Avengers: Infinity War and next year’s hugely anticipated sequel.

By the time Avengers 4 releases, the Russos will have spent almost seven years straight in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and so it’s understandable that they’d be looking to branch out for the next movie – and with the combined box office we can expect from their four Marvel movies, they’ll surely have their pick of projects.

Nevertheless, speaking at an Avengers: Infinity War Q&A hosted by Collider, the brothers have revealed that they would be tempted back to Marvel for one project in particular – Secret Wars.

As it happens, this isn’t the first time that the Russos have expressed their interest in Secret Wars, having previously stated that “If Disney’s takeover of Fox goes through, there are a lot more characters to work with all of a sudden, it might be interesting to do something like Secret Wars.”

Well, seeing as the takeover is expected to complete early next year…

If you’re unfamiliar with Secret Wars, it was a twelve issue event running between 1984 and 1985 and saw The Beyonder transporting many of the biggest heroes and villains from the Marvel universe to Battleworld, where they are pitted against one another. A modern-day Secret Wars event also launched in 2015, which followed a similar storyline but combined the main Marvel 616 universe with various other universes including Ultimate Marvel, Marvel 2099 and Age of Apocalypse.

Given their work for Marvel so far and their ability to juggle MANY characters, there’s no doubt that the Russos would be a great choice to direct a Secret Wars movie, should Marvel ever decide to move in that direction. Is it something you’d like to see? Let us know in the comments below…

Avengers 4 stars Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Josh Brolin (Thanos), Brie Larson (Captain Marvel), Paul Rudd (Scott Lang), Don Cheadle (War Machine), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther), Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier), Anthony Mackie (Falcon), Paul Bettany (Vision), Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Benedict Wong (Wong), Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax), Bradley Cooper (Rocket), Vin Diesel (Groot), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Pom Klementieff (Mantis), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Gwyneth Paltrow (Pepper Potts), Evangeline Lilly (The Wasp), Letitia Wright (Shuri), Jon Favreau (Happy Hogan), Tilda Swinton (The Ancient One) and Frank Grillo (Crossbones), as well as Hiroyuki Sanada (The Wolvervine) and Katherine Langford (13 Reasons Why).
