The Russos enlist F9 screenwriter for live-action Battle of the Planets movie

July 26, 2021 by Gary Collinson

Back during San Diego Comic-Con International in 2019, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo announced that they were developing a feature film adaptation of the classic 1970s anime series Battle of the Planets, and now comes word that the project has found its writer.

According to Deadline, F9 and Kin screenwriter Daniel Casey has signed on to scrip the live-action project, which the Russos are producing through their AGBO banner alongside Tatsunoko, the creators of the original anime series.

“We are thrilled to be working with a collaborator of Dan’s caliber on this beloved property,” said the Russos. “His passion, attention to detail, and thirst for innovation will no doubt delight fans of the IP while making a thoughtful introduction for newcomers. He is pioneer at heart and the perfect partner as we set out to lay the foundation of a universe which will engage audiences on a meaningful level and across the media landscape.”

“I’ve been a fan of Joe and Anthony going all the way back to Welcome to Collinwood and I’m so grateful they’ve entrusted me with this epic and cinematic story,” added Casey.

Based on Japanese series Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, Battle of the Planets follows Mark, Jason, Princess, Keyop, and Tiny, five orphans trained from a young age to protect Earth from otherworldly forces as the elite intergalactic team known as G-Force.
