The success of Venom may stop Spider-Man’s rights returning to Marvel

November 6, 2018 by Samuel Brace

Because Venom was such a success, the chance that Spider-Man’s rights return to Marvel has become slimmer according to a box office analyst.

Venom wasn’t exactly a hit with critics but fans went to see the Tom Hardy led film in droves, making Sony more than $500 million worldwide, and therefore becoming a truly successful venture for the studio.

But what does this mean for Spider-Man? Well, according to senior box-office analyst Jeff Bock over Exhibitor Relations, the success of Venom will make Sony more keen to keep Spider-Man in house. Speaking to Business Insider, Bock said:

“If it had failed, there is a chance Sony would have definitely returned to the bargaining table with Disney. Now, that’s up in the air.”

“[Sony] took a calculated risk with Venom, and it’s now going to be a series,. It seems Disney needs Sony’s Spider-Man more than Sony needs Disney … If they consistently make films audiences want to see, Disney will have to buy Sony to get Spider-Man back.”

“This is just the beginning of Sony’s reemergence as a studio of box-office distinction. They’re not giving it up without a fight.”

Venom succeeding as it has certainly does change the equation but what do you think? Would you prefer Spider-Man move between studios as he currently does or would you like Marvel to capture him and his world permanently?
