The Top 100 Your Sinclair ZX Spectrum Games: #1 – Deathcase

August 27, 2016 by Villordsutch

Well this is it!  We turn off Rebelstar and load up the final game in the Your Sinclair Top 100.  It’s been over three months but finally we get to see what the greatest ZX Spectrum* magazine believed was the ultimate title in the Spectrum’s history.  At No.#1 we have Deathcase from Micromega! (*probably)

It was in 1983 that Deathchase, aka 3D Deathchase, arrived on the 16K ZX Spectrum, programmed by Mervyn Estcourt and R.B. providing the loading screen. A simple game of one faceless mercenary sat astride a Big Bike, hunting down the mighty warlords within the forests of the Northern American continent.  The year is 2501, you’re here to earn your riches by feeding these law-breakers photon bolts from the front of your bike – but will you stay alive long enough to spend them!?

Deathchase arrived at just the right time to cash in on Return of the Jedi; most of us were still high on Wham Bars and watching Luke Skywalker scream through the Forests of Endor.  Then Deathchase dropped into our cassette players and screeched a similar scenario into our lives, and we couldn’t get enough of it.  Though it just repeats itself level after level, with the woods becoming a dense forest until you crash and die, we loved it then and it’s enjoyable now… but this game isn’t No.#1 worthy.

Rather depressingly we’ve arrived at the top spot and we haven’t seen games like Auf Wiedersehen Monty, Myth, Target: Renegade or Tai-Pan get a glimpse into this chart, which let’s face it is rather sad.  Still it’s been fun getting here and Deathchase is in truth a good game – it just shouldn’t be at No.#1.

Before I close the Your Sinclair Top 100, I’d like to say thanks for reading the countdown and I hope those of you that have followed this trip down the retro lane have enjoyed these past three months.  If you’d like to follow more retro videos then currently I’m reviewing ZX81 games (old amd new) on Villordsutch’s YouTube channel, as well as the Homebrew Reviews that appear here on FlickeringMyth.com first.  Thanks for watching and TTFN.
