The Walking Dead’s Khary Payton isn’t afraid of Ezekiel’s comic book fate

January 30, 2019 by Samuel Brace

Khary Payton, the actor who plays Ezekiel on The Walking Dead, has revealed that he isn’t worried about the prospect of the character’s approaching death.

The Walking Dead isn’t afraid of killing off major characters, either as a result of following the story in the comics or shepherding characters off screen like Rick. Now that the show is telling the Whisperers storyline, this means that Ezekiel’s time might soon be up too.

Some fans might be worried that the TV Ezekiel might meet the same end as his comic counterpart but actor Khary Payton isn’t nervous. Speaking to ComicBook.com, the actor said:

“You know what? It’s not nerve wracking because this entire experience of being on this show and playing Ezekiel has been so amazing,. One thing you have to understand about being on this show is that nothing is promised to anybody.

“Anybody could go at any point, and that’s just the nature of the show. It’s like, smoke ’em while you got ’em. Enjoy it while it lasts, and try not to live thinking about the future. Just enjoy the present moment, because who knows? I could be hanging around for a couple years, or I could be gone tomorrow. They always end up switching the things up with the comics, so who knows which way it might actually end up.”

It’s certainly true that things might not end up the same way for Ezekiel but audiences will just have to tune in to find out. Do you hope Ezekiel sticks around on the TV show? Let us know in the comments below or tweet us @FlickeringMyth.

The second half of The Walking Dead season nine finds our groups of survivors, both old and new, continuing to deal with the impact of events that took place during the six years that have passed. Since the disappearance of Rick, many of these characters have become strangers to each other, and in some ways, strangers to themselves. What they do know is that they are in undeniable danger. They will soon realise the world just beyond does not operate as they thought. The group’s rules and ways of survival no longer guarantee their safety. A whole new threat has crossed their paths, and they soon discover it’s unlike any threat they have encountered or endured before. The group will start to question what they think they see. What may appear to be normal in this post-apocalyptic world could actually be more disturbing and terrifying than when the apocalypse first broke out. All that is certain is the stakes are high and numerous.

The Walking Dead season 9 airs on Sundays in the US and on Mondays in the UK
