Ti West said he “wholeheartedly endorsed” David Corenswet for Superman

July 8, 2024 by EJ Moreno

David Corenswet has been eyed for Superman since 2021. We now have proof of that timeline from Pearl director Ti West.

In a recent piece in The Hollywood Reporter, West was profiled and able to discuss everything related to the X/Pearl/MaXXXine trilogy. Promoting the latter’s film’s release, West looked back at Pearl, which starred Corenswet in a critical role.

David Corenswet played the projectionist opposite Mia Goth, and the film served as his breakout role after years on television. All eyes were on the actor now, and it seemed like some of those eyes were James Gunn, who was looking to cast his Superman for the upcoming DCU movie.

One of the more interesting notes from the piece was Ti West revealing he got calls about Corenswet when Superman was casting. He admitted, “…I did get some calls when he was up for Superman. People were snooping around about him for that, and I wholeheartedly endorsed him. He deserves every bit of it, and I’m so excited to see [Superman].”

West praises the actor for his look, recalling seeing Clark Kent in Corenswet back then. The filmmaker says, “He does look like Superman, so that seemed sensible to me. But we just had a great conversation [during casting]. We’re from a similar part of the world, and we got along, and he understood the kind of movie [I wanted to make]. I think he said his favorite movie was Singin’ in the Rain, and when we were going to make Pearl, he understood the kind of golden age of Hollywood thing that he was coming into as a performer.”

Corenswet seemed to always have that wholesome, sweet quality: “He’s also just a great guy, and we just really got along. I think I’d seen him in Hollywood, and he was a good actor, but it was more that we just had a great conversation. He then came down to New Zealand, and we had a great time together.”

Ti West’s MaXXXine is now in cinemas. David Corenswet will star in James Gunn’s Superman next July.
