Tilda Swinton unsure if she’ll play the Ancient One in Doctor Strange as a man or a woman

July 25, 2015 by Gary Collinson

Back in May it was revealed that Marvel Studios had tapped Tilda Swinton (Snowpiercer, Trainwreck) to play the role of Dr. Stephen Strange’s mentor The Ancient One in the Phase Three release Doctor Strange.

Naturally, this led everyone to assume that Marvel had decided to gender swap the character – who in the comic book universe is an elderly Tibetan male – but it seems that may not be the case after all.

According to The Guardian, Swinton has said that “she doesn’t yet know if she will play the part as a man or a woman”. However, it should be noted that the article doesn’t contain any direct quotes from the actress, so we’ll have to see how this one plays out…

Doctor Strange is set for release on November 4th 2016, and will see Scott Derrickson (Sinister) directing Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) as the Sorcerer Supreme alongside Tilda Swinton (Snowpiercer) as The Ancient One and Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) as Baron Mondo.
