Tim Burton says making Beetlejuice 2 reminds him “why I liked making movies”

September 11, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Tim Burton feels refreshed after he wrapped production on Beetlejuice 2, but the filmmaker confirms the sequel is not ready yet.

The long-awaited follow-up to the 1988 original is set to be released next year, and we haven’t heard much about it from the man who created the iconic cult classic. Now, it’s time to hear from Burton about returning to one of his most notable works.

During a recent interview with The Independent, Burton looked at his past work and one of his most anticipated upcoming projects. With the Beetlejuice sequel looming, we got our first official update from the man behind the haunts.

Burton gave fans an update on where they are in production. “I feel grateful we got what we got. Literally, it was a day and a half. We know what we have to do. It is 99 percent done,” says the filmmaker.

Burton also offers some insight into the production, noting how so many recent films have left him “wrecked” by the end, but there was something magical about the Beetlejuice sequel.

It could be due to the nostalgia or the wonderful practical effects we saw in the set photos that leaked a while back. He recalls, “On this last one, Beetlejuice 2, I really enjoyed it. I tried to strip everything and go back to the basics of working with good people and actors and puppets. It was kind of like going back to why I liked making movies.”

The sequel sees the return of Michael Keaton as Betelgeuse, Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz, and Catherine O’Hara as Delia Deetz, alongside newcomers Jenna Ortega, Monica Bellucci, Willem Dafoe, and Justin Theroux.

Beetlejuice 2 is set for release on September 6th, 2024.
