True Detective renewed for fifth season with Issa López returning as showrunner

February 23, 2024 by Ricky Church

Just days after True Detective: Night Country concluded, HBO announced True Detective has been renewed for a fifth season. What’s more is Night Country showrunner Issa López will return to helm the next story in the crime anthology.

True Detective was created by Nic Pizzolatto with the first season airing in 2014. It was a huge success which earned large audiences and awards for the series and its lead stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. Each season has focused on a different case with a new cast of detectives.

The fourth season of True Detective was developed by López and featured Jodie Foster and Kali Reis investigating the disappearance of several researchers at an Arctic research station. According to HBO, True Detective: Night Country was the most watched season of the series with 12.7 million viewers across various platforms. López has also signed an overall deal for HBO where she will develop new series for the network and its streaming service Max.

“From conception to release, ‘Night Country’ has been the most beautiful collaboration and adventure of my entire creative life,” López said in a statement. “HBO trusted my vision all the way, and the idea of bringing to life a new incarnation of ‘True Detective’ with Casey, Francesca and the whole team is a dream come true. I can’t wait to go again.”

“Issa Lopez is that one-of-a-kind, rare talent that speaks directly to HBO’s creative spirit,” said Francesca Orsi, HBO’s Executive Vice President of Programming. “She helmed ‘True Detective: Night Country’ from start to finish, never once faltering from her own commendable vision, and inspiring us with her resilience both on the page and behind the camera. Alongside Jodie and Kali’s impeccable performances, she’s made this installation of the franchise a massive success, we are so lucky to have her as part of our family.”

It is unknown if López will follow True Detective tradition and develop a new case with a different cast or will keep following Foster and Reis’ Detectives Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro.

“When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.”

True Detective: Night Country is available to stream on Max and sees Jodie Foster and Kali Reis joined in the cast by Finn Bennett, Fiona Shaw, Christopher Eccleston, Isabella Star LaBlanc and John Hawkes.
