Universal sets Puss in Boots: The Last Wish release date

March 18, 2021 by Matt Rodgers

Among the seemingly endless list of movies clawing for a post-pandemic release date, a sequel to 2011’s Puss in Boots is likely one that you’d forgotten about, but when the original has grossed $555 million at the worldwide box-office, you can bet the fat cats over at Universal certainly hadn’t, which is why they’ve set a September 3rd, 2022 opening for the feline’s follow-up.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish will be directed by Joel Crawford, who was behind one of 2020’s biggest box-office performers, Croods: A New Age, which has grossed $158 million during a pandemic stricken year.

Antonio Banderas will once again return as the swashbuckling cat, who’s on the last of his allotted nine-lives and is in search of the mythical ‘Last Wish’ in order to restore them. At the time of writing, no other cast members have been confirmed.

A spin-off from the phenomenally successful Shrek franchise, the two IPs have grossed a total of $3.5 billion at the global box-office, but it has been over a decade since any character from The Kingdom of Far Far Away has been on the big-screen, so it will be interesting to see whether the milk has soured on Puss in Boots.
