Despite being the top rated cable show in its timeslot, The Walking Dead continued its dramatic slide in ratings, posting the lowest numbers since season one with Sunday’s ‘The Lost and the Plunderers’.
The AMC show, which once commanded an audience of 17.3 million viewers for its season five premiere, slumped to 6.8 million, and a 2.9 rating in the all-important adults 18-49 demographic. The last time the viewing figures dipped this low was season one’s penultimate episode ‘Wildfire’, which drew 2.8 million viewers, back before the show had shuffled into the mainstream.
The figures are still reasonably impressive considering the saturated TV landscape, one which has evolved over The Walking Dead‘s lifespan to incorporate streaming services and binge-watch television, but the show has faced a barrage of criticism for its overtly bleak tone, controversial deaths, and creative stagnation, that has led to numerous fall-outs and departing of showrunners.
