Warner Bros. developing Crazy Rich Asians sequel

August 25, 2018 by Gary Collinson

With the film having grossed over $50 million going into its second weekend at the domestic box office, it will come as no surprise to learn that Warner Bros. is already plotting a sequel to its hit romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians.

Deadline is reporting that producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson already have the rights to Kevin Kwan’s follow-up books China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems, and screenwriters Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim are expected to begin work on the script for the sequel soon.

Director Jon M. Chu plans to return for the second movie, while actors Constance Wu, Henry Golding and Michelle Yeoh all have options for the sequel. Once the script is complete, Warner Bros. will then decide whether to give the project the full green light.

New Yorker Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) receives an invitation from her boyfriend Nick Young (Henry Golding) to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore. Excited about visiting Asia for the first time but nervous about meeting Nick’s family, Rachel is unprepared to learn that Nick has neglected to mention a few key details about his life…

It turns out that he is not only the scion of one of the country’s wealthiest families but also one of its most sought-after bachelors. Being on Nick’s arm puts a target on Rachel’s back, with jealous socialites and, worse, Nick’s own disapproving mother (Michelle Yeoh) taking aim. And it soon becomes clear that while money can’t buy love, it can definitely complicate things.

Crazy Rich Asians features a cast that also includes Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Gemma Chan, Lisa Lu, Awkwafina, Harry Shum Jr., Ken Jeong, and Michelle Yeoh, Sonoya Mizuno, Chris Pang, Jimmy O. Yang, Ronny Chieng, Remi Hii, Nico Santos, and Jing Lusi.
