Warner Bros. Discovery boss on a DC Films reset and ten-year plan to emulate Marvel Studios

August 5, 2022 by EJ Moreno

Is DC finally trying to get itself together? Much like that messy friend we all have, the legendary brand of comics had quite the interesting past few years, even before the Snyderverse madness that began to brew in 2016. But with a new person now in charger of DC’s parent company, David Zaslav of Warner Bros. Discovery, the brand could be seeing a much-needed makeover.

During Thursday’s earnings call, which had all eyes and ears on its following the chaotic week at Warners Bros. Discovery including the shocking cancellation of Batgirl and the continued issues with controversial figure Ezra Miller, CEO David Zaslav said a new vision for DC Films is being implemented for future release.

“You look at Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman — these are brands that are known everywhere in the world,” said Zaslav. “We have done a reset. We’ve restructured the business where we are going to focus, where there is going to be a team with a 10-year plan focusing just on DC. We believe we can build a much more sustainable business.”

He adds that this plan is very obviously modelled after what Marvel and Disney have done since with the Marvel Cinematic Universe:

“It’s very similar to the structure Alan Horn, [former Disney CEO] Bob Iger and Kevin Feige put together very effectively at Disney. We think we can build a much stronger, sustainable growth business out of DC,” said Zaslav. “As part of that, we are going to focus on quality. We are not going to release any film before it’s ready. … DC is something we can make better.”

Even as a fan of the brand, it’s not hard to deny that some things need to be restructured. Is the polarizing figure that is David Zaslav the answer to all of this? Many feel like he’s not, but at the very least, DC having a strict plan and sticking to it will benefit fans and the money-lovers making the films.

Will they once again try a cinematic universe like Marvel, or is this more of an outline for the DC event film to come? Only time will tell, let’s just hope we see more from what audiences love in current DC films like The Batman, Joker, James Gunn-helmed projects, and the iconic female heroes that bring in big box office dollars.
