Warner Bros. moving ahead with animated Speedy Gonzales film

April 5, 2016 by Scott J. Davis

Deadline is reporting that Warner Bros. is set to bring one of its most beloved Looney Tunes characters to the big screen. The studio is moving ahead with its plans for a Speedy Gonzales animated feature, with Mexican filmmaker and actor Eugenio Derbez set to voice the title character.

“In Mexico we grew up watching Speedy Gonzales,” states Derbez. “He was like a superhero to us, or maybe more like a revolutionario like Simon Bolivar or Pacho Villa. He watched out for the little people but with a lot of bravado and a weakness for the ladies. I’m really excited to be bringing this character to the big screen. And besides being Mexican— my full name is Eugenio Derbez Gonzalez and I have big ears. The casting couldn’t be better.”

Speedy was a big part of the legendary Looney Tunes line-up that included Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck amongst others.
