Warwick Davis talks Star Wars: The Force Awakens, confirms appearance in Episode VIII

October 1, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Warwick Davis has been chatting to News.com about the Star Wars franchise, confirming that he’s set to add another instalment to his C.V. with an appearance in next year’s Star Wars: Episode VIII, as well as sharing his thoughts on J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens and the future of the Sequel Trilogy.

“I enjoyed [The Force Awakens] immensely,” he said. “I’m excited by J.J. Abrams work anyway, I love his style. For me it’s very reminiscent of the films I went to when I was a kid. I loved Super 8 and I love the new Star Trek, and it just reminded me of many of the great films of the 1980s. There was such a great energy, I think he captured the humour of the original trilogy so well. What we loved about those films was that they didn’t take themselves too seriously in places and were able to kind of look at themselves and have a bit of a chuckle. There were some wonderful moments, some moving moments and it was full of all the action that we expect, so for me it ticked all the boxes, I loved it. And I think it sets up the trilogy very well. Obviously we’re moving into the territory of Episode VIII very soon as well, and much like Empire Strikes Back I’m sure it’s going to deliver some quite impactful story moments, and it’ll leave us with some cliffhangers as well which resolve in Episode IX.”

Since making his debut as Wicket W. Warrick in 1983’s Return of the Jedi, Davis has went on to appear in both The Phantom Menace and The Force Awakens, along with the two Ewok spinoff TV movies Caravan of Courage and The Battle for Endor. He’ll also be appearing in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which opens this December.

Star Wars: Episode VIII is set for release on December 15th 2017 and sees returning cast members Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), Daisy Ridley (Rey), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Gwendoline Christie (Captain Phasma), Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix), Andy Serkis (Supreme Leader Snoke), Peter Mayhew and Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Tim Rose (Admiral Ackbar), Mike Quinn (Nien Nunb), Simon Pegg (Unkar Plutt), and Warwick Davis joined by new additions Benicio Del Toro (Guardians of the Galaxy), Laura Dern (Jurassic Park), Kelly Marie Tran (Ladies Like Us) and Jimmy Vee (Pan) as R2-D2.
