Willem Dafoe says making Aquaman is very different than Spider-Man

November 14, 2018 by Samuel Brace

Willem Dafoe, who once played the Green Goblin in Sam Rami’s Spider-Man, says that he enjoys how different it is making Aquaman to that earlier experience.

Sam Rami’s Spider-Man came out 16 years ago and this was the last time that Willem Dafoe has been in a superhero movie. He’s back in the mix now though with Aquaman where he will be playing the character Vulko.

Speaking in a recent interview with CinemaBlend, the actor talked about enjoying the different experiences of making Aquaman and Spider-Man: “They are different. They’re very different – because they have different aims. They’re working with different materials, their working with different intentions. But that’s okay!

“I like to mix it up because that way you don’t get stuck. You don’t start to believe that there’s only one way of doing things, and you don’t start believe there’s only one way of living, and you don’t start to believe there’s only a certain kind of film that’s worth making. It keeps you loose.”

A lot has certainly changed since Dafoe was last part of the superhero genre. Do you think his performance in Aquaman will be as memorable as his Green Goblin turn?

From Warner Bros. Pictures and director James Wan comes an action-packed adventure that spans the vast, visually breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas, “Aquaman”, starring Jason Momoa in the title role. The film reveals the origin story of half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry and takes him on the journey of his lifetime — one that will not only force him to face who he really is, but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be … a king.”

Aquaman is directed by James Wan (The Conjuring) and stars Jason Momoa as the titular hero, reprising his role from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, along with Amber Heard as Mera, Patrick Wilson as Ocean Master, Willem Dafoe as Dr. Vulko, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus, Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, Temuera Morrison as Tom Curry, Ludi Lin as Murk, Michael Beach as Jesse Kane, Djimon Hounsou as the Fisherman King, Randall Park as Dr. Stephen Shin, Otis Dhanji as a young Arthur Curry and Graham McTavish in an as-yet-unrevealed role.
