Wonder Woman cinematographer compares the film to Superman: The Movie and Batman Begins

May 30, 2017 by Gary Collinson

The embargo for Wonder Woman has lifted, and the latest chapter of the DC Extended Universe is proving to be a huge hit with critics, with many reviews hailing the Amazon Princess’ solo movie to be the best DC offering since The Dark Knight. Speaking to IGN to promote its release, cinematographer Matthew Jensen has compared the film to another two DC classics in Richard Donner’s Superman: The Movie and Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins.

“Every day seemed like a challenge because it was such a big and complicated movie,” said Jensen. “Just the knowledge that we were doing Wonder Woman’s story, solo, a movie that a lot of people had been trying to get off the ground for over 20 years, and she is one of the pop culture icons, so there was a lot of pressure on us to do it correctly. We were setting out to make something close to Richard Donner’s Superman or Batman Begins. We wanted to do her story that kind of justice so every day felt like we had that monkey on our back.”

“I’m certainly hoping a lot of the battle scenes, and Wonder Woman’s first emergence where she uses all of her abilities is pretty spectacular,” replied Jensen when asked if there are any particular scenes he expects to blow fans away visually. “It’s later on. You’re gonna have to wait on it a little bit but I think that’s good. I think it’s akin to, again, Christopher Reeve opening up his shirt and revealing the ‘S’ for the first time. That happens at about an hour into that movie and same thing with Christian Bale, he finally says ‘I am Batman’ about an hour into the movie and I think ours is similar.”

Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers…and her true destiny.

Wonder Woman will hit cinemas on June 1st in the UK and June 2nd in North America, with Patty Jenkins (Monster) directing a cast that includes Gal Gadot (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), Chris Pine (Star Trek), Connie Nielsen (Gladiator), Robin Wright (House of Cards), Danny Huston (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), David Thewlis (The Theory of Everything), Ewen Bremner (Snowpiercer), Said Taghmaoui (American Hustle), Elena Anaya (The Skin I Live In), Lisa Loven Kongsli (Force Majeure), Lucy Davis (Shaun of the Dead) and Ann Wolf.
