X-Men: First Class director would have made Apocalypse before Days of Future Past

June 7, 2019 by Samuel Brace

Matthew Vaughn, the director of X-Men: First Class, says that he would have done X-Men: Apocalypse before X-Men: Days of Future Past instead of after.

Now that Fox’s X-Men franchise is coming to an end with Dark Phoenix, there is plenty of retrospection going on, especially as the characters’ futures are unclear. One person looking back is Matthew Vaughn, the director of X-Men: First Class.

Speaking to Screen Rant, Vaughn revealed that he thinks Apocalypse would have been better if it had come out before Days of Future Past instead of afterward: “I think Apocalypse would have been better being before Days of Future Past, because then it could have carried on with those relationships growing and the characters growing there for a little bit more time and more character development. I think the concept was good of Apocalypse, but it wasn’t as good as Days of Future Past.”

Apocalypse certainly wasn’t as well received as Days of Future Past but at the end of the day, this is all history. We will have to wait and see what Marvel Studios does with the franchise going forward.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix sees Simon Kinberg directing a cast that includes franchise veterans Michael Fassbender (Magneto), James McAvoy (Professor X), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Alexandra Shipp (Storm), Sophie Turner (Jean Grey), Tye Sheridan (Cyclops), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Nightcrawler) and Evan Peters (Quicksilver) alongside new additions Kota Eberhardt (The Persian Connection) as Selene, Andrew Stehlin (Hacksaw Ridge) as Red Lotus, and Jessica Chastain (Molly’s Game) and Lamar Johnson (Kings).
