Although the series produced a number of memorable instalments throughout its 20-year history, fans of Marvel’s mutant superheroes are unlikely to be shedding too many tears over 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise coming to an end following the studio’s recent acquisition by Disney.
With fans already looking forward to the inevitable Marvel Studios rebiit, the final instalment, X-Men: Dark Phoenix, arrived with little anticipation, and unsurprisingly it tanked hard at the box office, where it is currently on course to become the biggest superhero flop of all time. Yikes.
A lot of the criticism towards the Fox X-Men movies has been aimed at Bryan Singer and Simon Kinberg, who have perhaps had the biggest influence on the studio’s handling of the franchise over the years, and now X-Men: Apocalypse actress Olivia Munn has chimed in, stating that she was “very frustrated” by Singer and Kinberg’s lack of knowledge about the X-Men mythos during her time on the 2016 movie.

“No, because I get like that too,” said Munn when asked if it frightens her how crazy some people get over comic to movie adaptations. “I think that people wouldn’t get so crazy if it was just a really great movie. When I was doing X-Men, I was actually surprised that the director and the writer didn’t even know that Psylocke had a twin brother. And I had to talk to them about a lot of different things about Psylocke and some other parts of the world that they didn’t know and that, as a fan, was very frustrating.”
Thankfully, with X-Men and Fantastic Four now back at Marvel Studios, fans can rest assured that a lack of knowledge of the characters and world will no longer be an issue.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix sees Simon Kinberg directing a cast that includes franchise veterans Michael Fassbender (Magneto), James McAvoy (Professor X), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Alexandra Shipp (Storm), Sophie Turner (Jean Grey), Tye Sheridan (Cyclops), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Nightcrawler) and Evan Peters (Quicksilver) alongside new additions Kota Eberhardt (The Persian Connection) as Selene, Andrew Stehlin (Hacksaw Ridge) as Red Lotus, and Jessica Chastain (Molly’s Game) and Lamar Johnson (Kings).
