It may have been a long wait, but Young Justice fans can rejoice because WB Animation has officially announced the animated series is coming back for a third season.
Original producers Greg Weisman and Brandon Vietti will return to the series to shepherd the new season and bring “new twists, turns and dangerous new threats for the team, but most importantly, the opportunity for fans to finally continue the adventures of some of their favorite Super Heroes,” according to WB Animation.
Sam Register, President for WB Animation and Digital Series, said “The affection that fans have had for Young Justice, and their rallying cry for more episodes, has always resonated with us. We are excited to bring the show back for this loyal fanbase and to provide an opportunity for new viewers to discover this excellent series.”
Young Justice ran for two seasons from 2011 – 2013. Rather than focusing on the heavy hitters of the DC universe, it instead focused on the sidekicks as they began training to formally work in the Justice League. Robin, Aqualad, Superboy, Artemis, Kid Flash and Miss Martian worked with other young heroes to protect the world and prove themselves to their mentors.
The series was cancelled in 2013, but not for lack of an audience but because of poor toy sales as confirmed by Weisman, particularly among the young female demographic. Young Justice remained popular, however, after its cancellation and gained more popularity due to Netflix. Over the years Young Justice fans have always let WB and DC know how much they supported the show and would like to see it comeback. Weisman is even often barraged with tweets about what he had in mind for Season 3 and beyond, but always kept tight-lipped should it ever return.
WB Animation did not reveal when or how Young Justice will return, if it will again air on Cartoon Network, or keep its current home on Netflix. Production is set to begin shortly, though, so with any luck more news will come sooner than later. Check back here for more Young Justice news, but for now stay “whelmed”.
