Deadline has revealed that Warner Bros. has acquired the rights to the hugely popular video game Minecraft, with a view to developing a live-action movie under producer Roy Lee, who is coming off the massively successful animated comedy The LEGO Movie.
Created by Swedish programmer Markus Persson and published by Mojang, Minecraft was released in 2009 and is an open-world sandbox game where players build and destroy constructs out of 3D cubes. The game has been ported to numerous platforms including Android, iOS, Xbox and PlayStation and has attracted over 100 million gamers, giving a potentially huge audience for Warner Bros. to market a movie.
