Hugh Jackman says it’s inevitable Fox will recast Wolverine

With the release of X-Men: Days of Future Past this May, Hugh Jackman will have made seven appearances as Wolverine, and while talking to IGN, the star has discussed his time as the clawed hero, and whether he thinks Fox had given any consideration to recasting the role of Logan, particularly with a younger actor for 2011’s X-Men: First Class

“I’m sure they had the discussion. They didn’t mention it to me, obviously! Look, that’s inevitable, man. Anyone who thinks they’re indispensable in this business is fooling themselves. But I feel unbelievably blessed to have this part. I never thought in a million years I’d get to play him seven times. Every day I walk on the set with the claws and the hair, I thank my lucky stars. I don’t take any of it for granted. To think that in a second version we’d have this cast and this director, and you guys don’t know the script, but I would say probably the best script of all of them, is pretty amazing. I think that’s why I’m still here. I’m sure by the way, that it won’t always be my decision to always be here. At some point, someone will close the door on me.”

Presumably, Jackman will reprise his role in 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse, but beyond that remains to be seen. Would you rather they stuck with Jackman, or is it time the character was recast? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below or head on over to The Flickering Myth Forum

X-Men: Days of Future Past is set for release on May 23rd with a cast that also includes James McAvoy (Professor X), Michael Fassbender (Magneto), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), Lucas Till (Havok), Halle Berry (Storm), Anna Paquin (Rogue), Ellen Page (Kitty Pryde) and Shawn Ashmore (Iceman) alongside franchise newcomers Evan Peters (American Horror Story) as Quicksilver, Booboo Stewart (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) as Warpath, Fan Binbing (Iron Man 3) as Blink, Adan Canto (The Following) as Sunspot, Josh Helman (Mad Max: Fury Road) as William Stryker, Evan Jonigkeit (Girls) as Toad, and Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) as Bolivar Trask.

I’d prefer not to see Wolverine at all. He consumes the plot of every film. Cyclops was mistreated so badly in Singer’s X-Men series; it would be nice if he was given some more space in these stories.

    • The Walking Cuban

I like those 2 character’s relationship in the comics, from Schism to the present, especially with Cyclops’s… growth as a character. You’re right. So much potential for the movies, especially since wolverine, like Hulk, is better when bounced off his teammates.

    • SenorApplesauce

They destroyed the chance to give him some depth in a relationship with his brother, Havok, by making him a character in First Class. That was a disappointment to me.

    • Micah 李 文 Jung

well that too next person on the list is beast or Sunspot or even New Mutants

  • Romelle Bradford

Keep it going. At least another X-MEN film and stand alone film. I feel he deserves it. He’s one actor that really tries for his fans and fans of comics. Each outing is better than the last (origins.. Lol). He’s always in better shape and tries to perfect the role. I really like his commitment to the role. For his age and to be doing various other roles but still keeping in shape for the next Wolverine film is great stuff. I don’t think there’s a actor playing a superhero (or any role) who has more dedication to their character. It’ll be bad enough for fans when RDJ sails off.

      well said.

  • skunkybeaumont

He was a bad choice for the role in the first place, a great actor but the wrong size for Logan. Wolverine is short, stocky, with a Napoleon complex. Hugh Jackman is tall, brooding and attractive to women.

    • james

Women want the tall, broading, attractive wolverine! Not a small twat with a ‘freddie crougar’ like complex and can’t see higher then her tits! It wont work with a small guy! If anybody christian bale should be the one to take the role once hugh has left!

      • Micah 李 文 Jung

Just because he had his bale rant doesnt mean he can do Logan!

      • numberonesorcerer

You obviously know dick about Wolverine. He is a short guy. He is not a ladies man. He is a loner and a rough son of a bitch.

    • Micah 李 文 Jung

yeah and watered down version of Logan

  • Roxtaf

Having been a fan if the comics for a long time, once the first x-men hit he big screen i was also a great fan of that, and Logan was awesomely cast in my opinion, and Jackman OWN the role so well. And to me he has in ever single appearence.
Where as i would love to see him in mre movies, i would honestly call it quits after Apocalypse, and maby even reboot the entire x-men scenematic universe, or at the very least give the older versions of the gang a rest for now and then reboot soon after.
There are so many awesome stories and a reboot will be comming at some point.

    • Micah 李 文 Jung

I want the other stories not a reboot though

      • Roxtaf

Uhh don’t get me wrong i wouldlove to se Hugh in alot more stories, the thng is i also like to see him do other stuff(tho miserable wasn’t my thing) and even if every second movie he does is as Logan, movies takes alot of tim to put together.
I would not mind at all if Hugh sticks with it as long as possible

  • Daniel Jesse Spade

I’ve never been Wolverine’s biggest fan, but the role clearly belongs to Jackman. The sensible thing to do if it gets to a point where there will be no more Jackman is to not include Wolverine in future films, and focus on some of the characters that normally have to chill in Wolvie’s shadow.

    • Romelle Bradford

I agree. If no Jackman, they should give Wolverine a rest. But that’s unlikely to happen due to his popularity

    • Micah 李 文 Jung

you think his the only logan? Oh there were several batmans one older guy adam west Micheal Keaton Val Kilmer George Clooney Christain Bale I am sure one other will other wolverines

      • Daniel Jesse Spade

Yes, but there was only ever one good Batman, and they should have stopped making Batman films after Adam West gave it up.

        • Micah 李 文 Jung

well batman is an icon just like Wolverine and I am sure there will be more logans .

  • BillyFucooo

Please for the love of god no more wolverine…. Decades worth of stories and characters and yet every damn movie is about wolverine

  • Cat

Huge Jackman is perfect as Wolverine and should play the character til he’s old and grey. But they really need to get rid of Halle Berry as storm. Grew up reading the comics from the 80’s well into the 90’s and loved all characters in the book. But when the movies were made Halle Berry never felt like the right fit. She seemed to make the character weak instead of strong.

  • Dan Drake

I always pictured wolverine as an older, weathered guy in the comics. Jack man is still too young for the way I see him, bub!

  • Jon Southam

No real problem with Jackman as Wolverine, to be honest I’m not sure many people could’ve done better.
Casting Masters as Cyclops was probably the big mistake, needed someone with a bit more presence.
In saying that, McAvoy and Fassbender are perfect for their roles so I really hope they’re not given a backseat in these next 2 films, that’s the reason I’m retaining hope that DOFP will be as awesome as I hope.

  • Lyndi

    Keep, keep, keep, keep!
    Hugh Jackman is Wolverine!

  • Razor905

So……….what you’re saying is, Jonah Hill as the next Wolverine?

  • Micah 李 文 Jung

interesting I would pick ryan Pinkston to Play Wolverine or Hutch Dano both pretty furry and imagine Pinkston being the beast with the claws!

  • jojo

either mark walhberg or even shia lebuff could play a good wolverine, they each could beef up. Lebuff has a hairy face & maybe could pul i toff & MWalhberg has a crazy eyebrow look to him, can bulk up, right height…he can do it.
