Comic Book Review – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #57

May 1, 2016 by Chris Cooper

Chris Cooper reviews Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #57…

“Leatherhead” Part 2! Mysterious intruders bring death and destruction to the new inhabitants of the Technodrome! Does Leatherhead know more than he’s letting on? Who can the Turtles trust?

The murder mystery continues this month as the TMNT begin to investigate who killed the recently released Utroms.

You won’t find many answers this month, though it would be pretty silly to expect everything to be tied up so quickly. I do wish Leatherhead would just spit everything out though. Hopefully his painfully slow explanation of his past won’t become a continually recurring plot point.

Back in the standalone Krang issue I was really impressed with how much character a brain with tentacles was given. Sophie Campbell then did a great job back in Turtles in Time #1.The creative team move all of that up a few notches here. The different little pink guys are clearly identifiable, not just in their appearance but also in their speech. I’m very interested in seeing more of them and getting a better understanding of how they work when they aren’t attempting to terraform our planet.

Once again the art team bring it. As the Turtles explore the tunnels underneath the Technodrome there is some stunning use of light. I can’t figure the ins and outs of it but it’s bloody impressive. Art team, I salute you.

There’s something about this arc that I’m really liking. Perhaps it feels like a more standard story after all the big things that have occurred lately. The turtles are together and they’re figuring something out. There are some fights, some cool scenes, and the intrigue levels are high.

I guess my biggest problem this month is that I’m impatient and want to know what’s going on! That’s pretty high praise for a murder mystery.

Rating: 7/10
