Comic Book Review – TMNT: Bebop & Rocksteady Destroy Everything! #5

June 30, 2016 by Chris Cooper

Chris Cooper reviews TMNT: Bebop & Rocksteady Destroy Everything! #5…

Time has been irreparably damaged and the fabric of reality is torn apart! Only a trip to visit the Time Lords in the 79th dimension holds any hope. But is time-traveller Renet still alive? Are the Turtles? Is anyone??

So that’s that. Five consecutive weeks of Bebop and Rocksteady, or ‘Bopsteady’ as I’ll now be calling them. How have I not heard them called that before?

Like, totally the biggest thing I’ve taken away from this week’s issue is how the Time Masters talk to each other. Totes. They speak like teenagers! Whoever thought of that deserves a big old pat on the back. To have such powerful and knowledgeable characters converse in such a way is just like amazeballs*.

We also get Sophie Campbell back this week. Yay! I’m aware that Sophie has finished her run on Jem now so can she come back onto TMNT?

It’s been good to see a little bit more of Bopsteady’s relationship. They’re loyalty and clear affection for each other is actually rather sweet. I wonder if they could ever be persuaded to do good? They’re willing to look out for each other so perhaps they could think about others? Not a question I think we’ll ever see answered but the story did get me thinking.

Has it been a resounding success? No. It’s had some bumpy moments, though they might be cleared up when reading it as a trade paperback.

Has it been entertaining? Yes. Multiple pairings of both mutated and unmutated idiots charging around time whilst the turtles (and Pepperoni!) try to help Renet fix it couldn’t be boring.

Has it been more successful than when DC try to do weekly titles? Definitely. It hasn’t felt like a cash grab for starters (I was not a big fan of their villains month).

*Is this how teenagers talk? I’m guessing to be honest.

Rating: 7/10
