Comic Book Review – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #60

July 29, 2016 by Chris Cooper

Chris Cooper reviews Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #60…

The Foot Clan headquarters is under attack and no one is safe as brother turns against brother!

If you’ve read last month’s issue of TMNT you’ll know that there’s very little I can say this month without giving things away.

I am left with mixed feelings regarding some of the decisions made. Could IDW be stronger with their decisions? It’s hard to say. It does appear that they’ve had a bit of a wobble this month though. The story is wrapped in a way that makes the turtles themselves seem like an afterthought. The writers knew how this would end but haven’t managed to make it look anything more than ‘the right thing happens at the right time’.

The issue does wrap up an arc of sorts, but this time doesn’t leave us with the usual big hints as to what the next one will include. I don’t read solicitations so I honestly don’t know what’s coming next. That in itself makes a nice change.

The artwork overall has been good, with strong emotions and Kitsune’s powers displayed well. It cancels out the sometimes odd facial expressions that the turtles suffer from. Good work, but I do miss Mateus.

I must mention that there is a great Mikey moment that made me smile. It’s short but shows him in a great light.

The more I write the more I’ve confused myself. I finished the issue and thought it was great. But as I think about what occurred in it and the story decisions made by the creative team I’m left wondering if it’s all been a bit fudged. We’ve seen worse from IDW, and overall the title is still going strong. This just might not be their finest hour.

Rating: 5/10
