Ghostbusters reboot crosses $150 million worldwide

August 1, 2016 by Luke Owen

It’s still splitting opinions three weeks after its release, but Ghostbusters is still pulling in the cash.

Facing stiff competition from Star Trek Beyond in its second week, The Secret Life of Pets still pulling in obscene numbers and newcomers Jason Bourne and Bad Moms, Ghostbusters dropped a further 54% to earn $9.8 million domestically. This brings its domestic haul to $106 million, which is more than some experts figured.

The film is also open in most of its major territories now, which has added another $52 million, giving it a worldwide total of $158 million. With a production budget of $144 million and a rumoured marketing budget of $100 million, this is quite the blow of Sony and a lack of Chinese release will see Ghostbusters struggle to turn a profit.

Director Paul Feig has said in interviews that Sony expected no less than $500 million worldwide.

Next week the competition gets stiffer as Suicide Squad hits cinemas – which is tracking big.

Thirty years after the original film took the world by storm, Ghostbusters is back and fully rebooted for a new generation. Director Paul Feig combines all the paranormal fighting elements that made the original franchise so beloved with a cast of new characters, played by the funniest actors working today. Get ready to watch them save the world this summer!

Ghostbusters is out now and sees Paul Feig (Spy) directing a cast that also includes Kristin Wiig (Bridesmaids), Melissa McCarthy (Spy), Leslie Jones (Saturday Night Live), Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live), Chris Hemsworth (Avengers: Age of Ultron), Andy Garcia (The Godfather: Part III), Michael K. Williams (Boardwalk Empire), Matt Walsh (Veep), Cecily Strong (Saturday Night Live), Neil Casey (Saturday Night Live) and Charles Dance (Game of Thrones). Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts are also all confirmed to cameo.
