Director Tim Miller comments on his Deadpool 2 departure: “Don’t believe what you read on the internet”

December 10, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Back in October came the rather surprising news that Deadpool director Tim Miller had left the sequel, with a subsequent report claiming that the departure was due to creative differences with star and producer Ryan Reynolds. According to rumour, Miller and Reynolds had “a contentious relationship”, with the director said to be keen on taking the sequel in a more stylized, big budget direction, as opposed to Reynolds, who wanted to retain the same tone as the original movie.

Well, Miller has now been speaking about his exit from the project for the first time, and he’s dismissed the rumours as being wide of the mark (hey, they did come from El Mayimbe, after all…), tellings fans “don’t believe what you read on the internet.”

“I just want to say one thing to the geek audience out there, because it’s important to me what the geeks and nerds of the world think because they are my brothers and sisters,” said Miller. “I didn’t want to make some stylized movie that was 3 times the budget. If you read the internet — who cares, really? But for those of you who do, I wanted to make the same kind of movie that we made before because I think that’s the right movie to make for the character. So don’t believe what you read on the internet. I wanted to do the same thing [as the first movie]. Kyle Chandler was not going to be Cable. All this stuff that I read kind of kills me.”

Miller, who has since been replaced in the director’s chair by John Wick co-director David Leitch, went on to wish Fox well with the sequel: “I wish them nothing but good — I hope it’s great. I hope it’s a great movie. Because I love the character and I think it’s great, and I love all the actors and I want to see them successful again. I haven’t met David, but he’s a great guy from everything I’ve heard. I want nothing but the best for the character. And for Fox, too. They deserve to make more money. They need to make more money [laughs]. They were great. They were terrific.”

Miller wasted no time in finding another project post-Deadpool, signing on to direct the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie, and is also developing an adaptation of the cyber-thriller novel Influx at Fox.
