Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 announced; first movie opens to $93.4 million

August 10, 2014 by admin

We reported on Wednesday the opening night for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles could mean that its success will de-throne Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Well, the weekend numbers are in (we’ll have the full report up tomorrow) and the Michael Bay produced live-action reboot has pulled in a huge $65 million domestic, not only knocking James Gunn’s space opera from the number one spot, but also leading to Paramount announcing a sequel.

Read our ★★ review of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles here.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 is set for release on June 3rd 2016 and will again be produced by Michael Bay and Platinum Dunes. No word yet on whether Jonathan Liebsman will return to direct. It will open the same weekend as Paramount’s own Sausage Party and a week before X-Men: Apocalypse and Disney’s Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles now has the fourth biggest August weekend opening behind The Bourne Ultimatum, Rush Hour 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy. With an extra $28 million from overseas, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles pulled in a global total of $93.4 million.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is directed by Jonathan Liebesman (Wrath of the Titans) and features a cast that includes Megan Fox (Transformers) as April O’Neil, Pete Ploszek (Parks and Recreation) and Johnny Knoxville (Jackass Presents Bad Grandpa) as Leonardo, Alan Ritchson (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) as Raphael, Jeremy Howard (How the Grinch Stole Christmas) as Donatello, Noel Fisher (Battle Los Angeles) as Michaelangelo, Danny Woodburn (Seinfeld) and Tony Shalhoub (Monk) as Splinter, William Fichtner (The Dark Knight) as Eric Sachs, Will Arnett (The LEGO Movie) as Vernon Fenwick, Whoopi Goldberg (Ghost) as Bernadette Thompson, and K. Todd Freeman (The Dark Knight) as Baxter Stockman.Watch the latest trailer here.
