Marvel might be looking to Angelina Jolie to direct Captain Marvel

February 8, 2015 by Gavin Logan

Marvel have been whittling down names they want to direct their upcoming Captain Marvel movie and according to OK!Magazine Angelina Jolie has been offered the job.

The February edition of the celebrity gossip magazine is claiming “that bosses at Disney-owned Marvel were so impressed with Unbroken that they’re offering Angie $20 million for the gig”. The magazine’s inside source is spouting that Jolie is “thrilled by the offer” and that “having a female director is a priority for them.”

Despite being thrilled Jolie is also said to be very shocked that Marvel wanted her: “She never thought she’d be in such huge demand as a director, and to be courted by Marvel after the Sony fiasco is a huge pat on the back.” This refers to the disdainful comments made by Scott Rudin to Sony’s Amy Pascal about Jolie’s behaviour and personality issues in a bunch of leaked emails.

Jolie’s last outing in the director’s seat was Unbroken starring Jack O’Connell (Starred Up) as Louis Zamperini, an Olympic athlete who joined the armed forces during the second World War. Only to be captured by the Japanese navy after a plane crash in the Pacific. While the film has received a fairly mixed reaction since its release many critics have picked out O’Connell’s performance as one of the best of the year. Unbroken is currently nominated for three Academy Awards in the Cinematography, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing categories.

Considering the source is a gossip magazine it’s best not to take this news as a given just yet but it makes sense that Marvel might want a female director – and a strong willed one at that – to debut their first solo female superhero.

Captain Marvel is due out July 6th 2018.
