Star Wars Rebels’ Dave Filoni thinks Captain Rex appears in Return of the Jedi

April 3, 2016 by Gary Collinson

During a Q&A after a screening of the Star Wars Rebels season two finale ‘Twilight of the Apprentice’, showrunner Dave Filoni has lent his support to a popular fan theory suggesting that The Clone Wars and Rebels‘ Captain Rex makes an appearance during the Battle of Endor in 1983’s Return of the Jedi.

“I think the one thing I have really thought about is I really do think that Rex is that guy on Endor. I really do. Why else is there a bearded old guy on Endor, Tano? Why? It makes no sense. If you don’t want that to happen, do you know what that means? I’m gonna make that happen. I’m getting like Palpatine, I’m getting power crazy.”

The character in question is actually called Nik Sant, a.k.a. Gramps, who – like the majority of characters who appear on screen in the saga – has his own backstory from the old Expanded Universe. However, with Disney jettisoning the previous canon, this could very well turn out to be our first (retconned) look at a Rebels character on the big screen…
