It’s probably pretty safe to say that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice wasn’t the rip-roaring success that Warner Bros. wanted to kickstart its DC Extended Universe. The film took a bashing from critics, as well as a large section of fans, and it seems that Alfred Pennyworth actor Jeremy Irons shares many of the same complaints.
“Deservedly so,” said Irons, when talking to The Daily Mail about the film’s negative reviews. “I mean it took $800 million, so the kicking didn’t matter but it was sort of overstuffed. It was very muddled. I think the next one will be simpler. The script is certainly a lot smaller, it’s more linear.”
It’s likely that Irons is referring to Justice League when he mentions “the next one”, given that he’s returning as Alfred, although he could also be referring to the solo Batman movie, where he’ll also presumably reprise the role… assuming he hasn’t upset too many people at Warner Bros. with his vocal criticism of Dawn of Justice, that is.
