Melissa McCarthy calls the Ghostbusters trailer “confusing”; confirms the movie is not a sequel

May 3, 2016 by Luke Owen

It was revealed recently that the Ghostbusters reboot trailer is the most hated trailer in the history of YouTube (we didn’t like it much either), and one of its stars has spoken very openly about it.

When it was released in April, audiences seemed confused as to whether the movie was a sequel or a reboot. Although Paul Feig and the cast said in interviews it was a reboot, the trailer suggested it was a sequel that takes place thirty years after the original. Well, Melissa McCarthy is setting the record straight by telling us all that this is a reboot and is not connected to the 1984 comedy classic.

“It’s a reboot, not a remake,” she confirmed on The Johnjay & Rich Show. “I know it’s weird that they say [in the trailer] ’30 years ago,’ but in this movie it’s like the first one didn’t happen.”

“It’s a great story but told totally differently,” she adds. “It’s the same thing of four unlikely heroes, it’s in New York city, ghosts are taking over. It’s the same classic story, but it’s not a ’30 years later’.”

When asked if she thought the marketing was confusing, McCarthy answered, “Believe me, the question was asked. I think it’s very confusing. But then everyone said, ‘We don’t care what you think’.”

What did you make of the Ghostbusters trailer? Was it as confusing as McCarthy thinks?

Thirty years after the original film took the world by storm, Ghostbusters is back and fully rebooted for a new generation. Director Paul Feig combines all the paranormal fighting elements that made the original franchise so beloved with a cast of new characters, played by the funniest actors working today. Get ready to watch them save the world this summer!

Ghostbusters is set for release on July 15th and sees Paul Feig (Spy) directing a cast that also includes Kristin Wiig (Bridesmaids), Melissa McCarthy (Spy), Leslie Jones (Saturday Night Live), Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live), Chris Hemsworth (Avengers: Age of Ultron), Andy Garcia (The Godfather: Part III), Michael K. Williams (Boardwalk Empire), Matt Walsh (Veep), Cecily Strong (Saturday Night Live), Neil Casey (Saturday Night Live) and Charles Dance (Game of Thrones). Meanwhile, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts are all confirmed to cameo.
