Jackie Earle Haley to play villain in Robert Rodriguez’s Alita: Battle Angel

September 15, 2016 by Justin Cook

It looks like Jackie Earle Haley is the latest actor to join the cast of Robert Rodriguez’s Alita: Battle Angel, as The Hollywood Reporter claims that he has signed on to play a “monstrous cyborg” villain. The report also states that a fair amount of CG and greenscreen will be required to bring the Preacher actor’s role to life.

As of now, the rest of the film’s cast includes Django Unchained and The Legend of Tarzan actor Christoph Waltz, who came on board the project a few weeks ago, and Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials actress Rosa Salazar, who will portray the title character, Alita.

Alita: Battle Angel is based on the similarly titled manga series Battle Angel Alita, which is set in the 26th century and centers around an amnesiac cyborg (Salazar) discovered by a cybernetics doctor in a junkyard. After remembering that she is skilled in the practice of martial arts, she becomes a criminal-hunting assassin, all while discovering who she is/was.

James Cameron and his longtime partner Jon Landau, will be producing the movie under their Lightstorm Entertainment banner; Terminator: Genisys co-writer Laeta Kalogridis is set to pen the script. If all goes well, production on the film, which reportedly has a budget of well over $100 million, will get underway this October in Austin.

20th Century Fox’s Alita: Battle Angel is currently scheduled for release on July 20th, 2018.
