Christopher Nolan brought the curtain down on his acclaimed Batman trilogy in 2012 with The Dark Knight Rises, delivering a definitive ending to Bruce Wayne’s story as he faked his own death in order to live out the rest of his life with Selina Kyle, whilst seemingly passing on the mantle of the Dark Knight to Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s John Blake.
While the ending seemed ripe for a spinoff sequel following the adventures of a new Batman, Gordon-Levitt never got to don the cape and cowl, with Nolan moving away from the franchise and Warner Bros. opting to reboot with Ben Affleck as the Caped Crusader in the DC Extended Universe. However, there’s no regrets on JGL’s part, as he felt it was a “perfect” ending to the story, and a sequel would have been unnecessary.
“I know we’re all used to the sort of Marvel movies, which are just kind of endless series,” the actor tells CinemaBlend. “They don’t really have a beginning, middle, and end. But I think Nolan very much thought of that movie as a conclusion, and there’s a theme that runs through all three of those movies that begins in the first movie, runs through the second movie and it concludes in that moment where he says that Batman is more than a man, Batman is a symbol. And so to have another man other than Bruce Wayne kind of becoming Batman at the end of that trilogy, I think that’s the perfect ending to that story.”
